In the world of electronic control systems, relays play a crucial role in switching circuits and managing the flow of electricity. Among various types of relays, the bistable relay stands out due to its unique characteristics and advantages. Often referred to as a latching relay, the bistable relay maintains its last switched state even when the power supply is turned off. This capability makes it an efficient and versatile component in various applications, ranging from home automation to industrial control systems.

What is a Bistable Relay?
A bistable relay operates with two stable states, meaning it can be switched between two positions (typically open and closed) without the need for continuous power to maintain the state. This is in contrast to traditional relays, which require a constant voltage to hold the contacts in a specific position. Instead, bistable relays use magnetic fields generated by two coils, typically referred to as Set and Reset coils, to toggle between states.
When an electrical current is applied to the Set coil, the relay shifts to one position (e.g., turning on a light). Conversely, applying current to the Reset coil changes the relay back to its original state (e.g., turning off the light). Once the relay has been set or reset, it remains in that position until the opposing coil is activated, making it an ideal solution for applications where power consumption must be minimized.
